Why Breastfeed?

During breastfeeding, nipple stimulation from baby's suckling causes nerve stimulation to trigger releases of oxytocin, which in turn mean that your body is relaxed, and allows milk to let down. It is important to be comfortable and relaxed when breastfeeding, in order to allow this beautiful chain of events to occur. Oxytocin also allows uterine contractions, assisting to allow your uterus to return to its original size. Oxytocin also creates bonding between you and your baby.

Oxytocin to help heal Mum and bond Mum and Baby

To ensure you have a great volume of breastmilk, always remember - the more comes out, the more comes in. Feed your baby and express your milk! Sometimes the flood gates open and sometimes they don't. If you need help with under supply or over supply, Moana Care can certainly work with you to tweak this to match your baby's needs.

the more milk that comes out,

reduces risks of future disease for both Mum and Baby

There is evidence that breastfeeding reduces disease in Mother and Baby, starting with helping baby by a reduction in obesity, asthma, type 1 and 2 diabetes, ear infections in baby, gastrointestinal infections, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, SIDS/SUDI (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC, premature babies). And in Mum: reducing risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast, ovarian and endometrium cancer, reducing bleeding and infection after birth, spacing between pregnancies, and maintaining a healthy weight.

World Health Organisation recommended feeding method

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age, and continued breastfeeding until 2 years of age and beyond, alongside family foods.

Breastmilk is made from your own bodies cells - these alone create amazing antibodies for your baby. The antibodies protect baby from becoming unwell. Breastmilk is custom made for your baby - by you. It is the perfect milk for your baby, and is always the perfect composition of nutrients to ensure your baby grows to their full potential.

Breastfeeding is not only good for you, but also great for your baby. Breastfeeding involves an infant being placed at the mothers breast, attaching, and drawing out breastmilk. Ensuring your care providers are aware you want your baby placed on your chest straight after birth, and allowing for 'the golden hour' - an uninterrupted hour of skin to skin contact between you and your baby, is imperative. During these precious first moments together, this allows baby to have opportunity to seek out your breasts and enjoy their first breastfeed.
